Dracula mission: failed!!!

by | | 2 comments

Ward duty in the medical posting is practically tiring. Before 5pm I was already all drenched out under that nylon white coat. Thinking of the following 'on call' duty later is really an additional whip of torture to the mind. However, time seems to just past as the night proceeds. The 'on call' duty was more of taking up a 'dracula' job for the night. Being a freshie 3rd year student, venepuncture is the main procedure for a start. The doctors and nurses will just gladly assign you the specimen bottles and tell you the bed number. Then, just before you go prepare the 'tools' needed for the job, slowly you take a walk, search for the victim, and take a peek on who and how he or she is. After that, you will either feel more relieved, or you will feel that your palpitations just got faster. Throughout the proccess, the only things I felt was palpitations and focal concentration. Seeing blood oozing out is the only relieving factor. Most of the times it does seems as if we are looking for victims to be guinea pig, especially from the look patients gave. And the best part is that patients can really groan as you perform your job and also 'merajuk' if you failed to accomplish the given task. Now you think being a dracula is easy? I wish I don't have to. But I am thankful enough that I've not experienced that. However, today is really not my night.
Dracula mission: Failed!!!
Ah! I am so depressed! I felt so sorry :(

how come I was not told

I was well aware of how hard medical studies could be, how crazily hectic a doctor's life would be, but how come I was not told that leg and back ache are part of the great difficulties to anticipate?

If life is tough enough, if life is complicated enough, or if life is hecticly tiring enough; shouldn't our existence made it easier for each other?

Maybe we don't have to like everyone, just make friends...

Thursday relief

by | | 0 comments
After whole week of strenously hectic week, the weekend has finally come. What a relief! For the past one week, it is as if I don't even remember to have the time to take a breath. Early in the morning, before the day is lighted up, we have to crawl out of our bed to prepare to go to the hospital. From there, ward duties, clinics, bed-side-teachings (BST), continuous medical education (cme), presentation, lectures all continuosly, NON STOP. That is only one thing. A typical starts around 6 sthg in the morning until +/- 1130pm (depending whenever the lectures end). On an even more packed day, there will only be a merciful time just enough for us to gobble our lunch/dinner before resuming the activities again.

By Thursday, everyone was much relieved. After dinner, we stopped by this fair (some ladang and ternakan thingy). It was quite interesting. There were really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really huge cows, bull, and also some goats. They even have dalmantian species of goats! Besides that, there is lots of other things to see and buy. We even saw a Sabah cultural dance. The canopies were all nicely decorated and it is themed according to the states in Malaysia.

Well, thats all for today.. "Happy ' Merdeka', people!" :)

Not dead, just stranded

by | | 0 comments
In case you are wondering why have I not been updating my blog lately, I am not dead; just stranded. I am stranded in Bukit Khor in the district of Rusila, Marang not for a year or two, but for three years!!! (provided that I pass my exam of course)

Thats the UCSI KT in campus hostel, where I am staying now. If you are looking down from an airplane or helicopter, you'll know you spot me when you see a lot of hills and in the midst of no where, you suddenly see some building with red spots.

The building far back there is the hospital I am posted to for my clinical years and thats Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah, Kuala Terengganu.

Modesto-Hilton

by | | 0 comments
Few days ago, we decided to have some sort of a "high-class night" for fun. We were thinking of Argentina Steakhouse but flipping over the menu placed outside, it doesn't look too interesting so we jumped to the next door neighbour instead.

Dinner at Modesto (the restaurant), KL

There was only 2 table of diners, including us, that night. The surrounding and the ambience was nothing impressive or really worth mentioning about but it is still not a bad place though. It is simple and not crowded. Moving on to the food, no doubt they really pamper your taste buds with their deliciously fine cooking. However, it is not quite a satisfying meal. The portions are really small lor~!

(Chef's recommended) Pasta & Lamb shank with red wine and herbs

Comparitively speaking, the price wasn't really expensive for these kind of meal BUT given that size of the portion served on your plate, this place is awfully pricey. At least it gives you the feeling that it is not worth it.

After dinner, we drove to Hilton and have a drink. Since Le Meridien was just beside Hilton, we walked around, sipping in the 'classy' air. It was incredibly fulfilling. Le Meridien feels more cosy while Hilton is more lively. I decided we should go Hilton and so we went.

Le Meridien's lobby.

Le Meridien's passport.

Hilton hotel and my choco cinno.

A cup of rich and frothy drink, that gives you the "slluuurrrrrpppp....aahhhhhh" feeling, is simply perfect to conclude our night. That's our night out in KL.

Someone asked me, "什么人是最美?"

I paused. I thought. Did he mean what kind of race? or what kind of nationality? I paused again and I looked at him, searching for any visible hints. He returned me with a smile and asked again, "什么人是最美的呢?"

I replied, "是不是 有喜乐合爱心的人?"

"不." "是会笑的人." And that was his answer.

Solo Yogya trip (Day 2)

by | | 1 comments
Day 2
-30th April '07-

..the adventure continues. (click here to read on Day 1's sharing)

Early in the morning, we woke up to catch an early train to Yogyakarta from Solo. We intended to catch the earliest train available but I guess sleep is still more a little more important. But anyhow, we managed to hop on to a morning train. We bought our tickets, which cost only 7,000 Rp per person. Train is indeed a cheap way to get by. While waiting for the arrival of the next train, we had our breakfast at a stall outside. We took Soto for our breakfast, which cost only 3,ooo Rp per bowl. The Soto is a bowl of soup with some rice, bean sprouts (tauge), and sliced meats (beef). Tasted quite alright but not really filling. There's a whole stretch of food, mostly fried stuffs, for you to add on to your bowl though. Some advice; if you happened to order tea, please remember to ask them to reduce the sugar or else order a plain tea. Those people are super genorous when it comes to sugar. [Rate: 3 stars]

Upon arrival at Yogya, we walked to Malioboro street, which is sort of like one of their main and busy street. From there we took a 'becak' (a.k.a 'beca' in Malaysia language or trishaw in English) to Metro hotel. The ride was quite some distance but we only got a bargain fee of 2,000 Rp which is only equivalent to RM0.80!!! With bags, luggages, and two butts that the seat can fit, for a distance about 3 or 4 km, for only 80 sen?! I can't believe I offer that little to this guy. By far, he is the cheapest trishaw ride we got. A trishaw ride can be cheap but have to be very careful because once they spot you as a foreigner, the price can be much more costly. So, it is good to roughly know the price range (ask the locals..i mean those with a trustable look) before hiring a trishaw. Set a limit to how much you can give and discuss with them. With all the trishaws and 'kereta kuda' lining up along the whole Malioboro street, it is not hard to get one with a reasonable price.

We settled for Hotel Metro. It was nice and cheap compared to others. The tourist information counter operator at the train station tried offering an arrangement to get us a place in that hotel. Not a bad idea, but it is cheaper if you go there by yourself to get the room.
After settling in the hotel, we hired another 'becak' to tour around Yogja. He first brought us to some commercialised tourist spots like the Batik place, Yogja T-shirts centres, and souvenirs shop, which is not our main interest. And just beside a souvenir shop, there is a bird market. They sell all kind of birds and bird foods. Oh, they even sell bats there. We spotted one weird and creepy looking bird which is not caged. The owner went and pook the resting bird and it went staring at us with a creepy look. By the way, they have also put up a big banner saying that this market is free from bird flu.

(a.) Soto for breakfast
(b.) Yogyakarta's train station
(c.) The backpacker me ;)
(d.) Malioboro street @ Yogya
(e.) Batik making
(f.) This is the bird I am talking about

And then finally, we were brought to some real tourist spots. Our first destination was Keraton, the place where the Sultan lives.

The Keraton. The royal family are really still staying inside, but we are not allowed to go to that area.

After a guided visit at the Keraton, we had Bakso at a stall outside. It was nice. It is somesort of noodle with balls; I mean fish balls kind of balls. One thing we learnt from this lunch is that, never eat at any place without checking at the price first. Alot of them charge a slaughtering price to tourists. It may not be very expensive to you, but eating at such a price in that place is expensive. We tend to go for places where they put their prices up. It is far safer that way. Anyway, I really love Bakso. Should try one! [Rate: 4.5 stars]

After our lunch, we told the trishaw guy we would like to visit Taman Sari, the royal's bathing place or something like that I think. Then he brought us through some places with papaya trees, and went through housing areas like this...

..before reaching to an abandoned like site. I think that is the old Taman Sari.

The old Taman Sari. And the dark guy is my trishaw guy for that day ;)

And this is the new Taman Sari, I think. Quite a majestic look from outside. It is a water park. We did not go in though.

The famous Nasi Gudeg street

At night, we were brought to eat Nasi Gudeg by our trishaw guy. One cute thing you can see in Indonesia is that if you see one selling coffin, the whole street/ area will be selling the same thing as well. And here we are at the Nasi Gudeg street. haha. It was quite alrite. Just pick any of the one shops there, they all sell the same thing. [Rate: 3 stars]

Father's hand

by | | 0 comments

A father's hand toils day and night,
knowing nothing but to provide;

A father's hand is like a cane by our foot,
guarding each step we take;

A father's hand may almost always seems tough and 'hard',
but a father's hand too has a gentle hold that says,
"It's ok, daddy is here"

..and that's my father's hand. Love you, daddy! Happy Father's Day!

goodbye, aunty

by | | 0 comments
Not too long ago I heard that one of my friend's mom was diagnosed with leukemia, it was a rather shocking sad news; and that was around last year's christmas. She was a nice, sweet and loving aunty.

And today, I just got to know that she has already peacefully left last month. May you rest in peace, aunty... and may God bring comfort to those who's grieving for you.

Have you ever felt that you have

gone so far that what if, maybe,..

you know,..that kind of fear that you

might just touch the end-point

anytime and yet you have gone so

far that you can't afford to

turn back now...?

Is this what people termed as the fear of losing? I wonder. The race is yet to finish. The journey is yet to end. But this feeling is mounting horrendously in me...

dream home...

My friend and I went for a drive around Kepong today. It was a rainy day and we went round few housing estates, chit-chatting in the car. One of the places we went was Desa ParkCity. That place is so awesome!!! It gives you the instant thrill that makes you go, "Woww~~...!!!".

Filled with serenity and tranquility all over, it is a place that makes you feel like living.

my dream home...

Will I ever own one?... when it cost about six or seven hundred thousand plus?! :'(

I really hope I could. Not for me alone, but for my dearest grandma and parents...they deserve this.

Chat with God

by | | 0 comments
Got this from an email quite some time ago. Though it is not new year now, it is yet an enlightening and meaningful chat to read thru :)

God : Hello. Did you call me?

Me: Called you? No.. who is this?

God : This is GOD. I heard your prayers. So I thought I will chat.

Me: I do pray. Just makes me feel good. I am actually busy now. I am in the midst of something.

God : What are you busy at? Ants are busy too.

Me: Don't know. But I cant find free time. Life has become hectic. It's rush hour all the time.

God : Sure. Activity gets you busy. But productivity gets you results. Activity consumes time. Productivity frees it.

Me: I understand. But I still cant figure out. By theway, I was not expecting YOU to buzz me on instant messaging chat.

God : Well I wanted to resolve your fight for time, by giving you some clarity. In this net era, I wanted to reach you through the medium you are comfortable with.

Me: Tell me, why has life become complicated now?

God : Stop analyzing life. Just live it. Analysis is what makes it complicated.

Me: why are we then constantly unhappy?

God : Your today is the tomorrow that you worried about yesterday. You are worrying because you are analyzing. Worrying has become your habit. That's why you are not happy.

Me: But how can we not worry when there is so much uncertainty?

God : Uncertainty is inevitable, but worrying is optional.

Me: But then, there is so much pain due to uncertainty..

God : Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.

Me: If suffering is optional, why do good people always suffer?

God : Diamond cannot be polished without friction.Gold cannot be purified without fire. Good people go through trials, but don't suffer. With that experience their life become better not bitter.

Me: You mean to say such experience is useful?

God : Yes. In every terms, Experience is a hard teacher. She gives the test first and the lessons afterwards.

Me: But still, why should we go through such tests? Why cant we be free from problems?

God : Problems are purposeful roadblocks offering beneficial lessons (to) enhance mental strength. Inner strength comes from struggle and endurance, not when you are free from problems.

Me: Frankly in the midst of so many problems, we don't know where we are heading....

God : If you look outside you will not know where you are heading. Look inside. Looking outside, you dream. Looking inside, you awaken. Eyes provide sight. Heart provides insight.

Me: Sometimes not succeeding fast seems to hurt more than moving in the right direction. What should I do?

God : Success is a measure as decided by others. Satisfaction is a measure as decided by you. Knowing the road ahead is more satisfying than knowing you rode ahead. You work with the compass. Let others work with the clock.

Me: In tough times, how do you stay motivated?

God : Always look at how far you have come rather than how far you have togo. Always count your blessing, not what you are missing.

Me: What surprises you about people?

God : when they suffer they ask, "why me?" When they prosper, they never ask "Why me" Everyone wishes to have truth on their side, but few want to be onthe side of the truth.

Me: Sometimes I ask, who am I, why am I here. I cant get the answer.

God : Seek not to find who you are, but to determine who you want to be. Stop looking for a purpose as to why you are here. Create it. Life is not a process of discovery but a process of creation.

Me: How can I get the best out of life?

God : Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear.

Me: One last question. Sometimes I feel my prayers are not answered.

God : There are no unanswered prayers. At times the answer is NO.

Me: Thank you for this wonderful chat. I am so happy to start the New Year with a new sense of inspiration.

God : Well. Keep the faith and drop the fear. Don't believe your doubts and doubt your beliefs. Life is a mystery to solve; not a problem to resolve. Trust me. Life is wonderful if you know how to live.

Trip to Solo-Yogya

by | | 1 comments
DAY 1

-29 Apr 2007-

From left to right, starting from the top:

1) Looking at the sun rising in the midst of KL clouds

2) Arrived at Solo airport at 9.20am (Indonesia time)

3) The street outside the airport

4) The street outside the Solo Balapan train station

5) One of the many monuments/statues along the road. Most serve as a roundabout, I think.

6) Pasar Gede (side view). By the time we reached there, it was already closing. Besides the one mistake we made; spending too much time choosing for a hotel room, alot of tourist attractions are closed by 2pm!!! So, we just walked around the city that day.

This is how the journey began...

On the 29th of April 2007, I left my house at about 3 something in the morning, took a bus from KL sentral, arrived at LCCT, ate McD breakfast set and then flew in the airbus to Solo at about 7 am. These whole morning travels were just plain COLD and sleepy..*yawn* and *shiver*. Well, at least I get to see the sunrise on a plane(,which got me amazed for a few minutes because after snapping a picture or two, I shut the window and cuddled to sleep.) I was really really really sleepy..coz I did not sleep at all the night before. I packed my luggage last minute and I packed until the very last minute before leaving my house. But thank God, I managed to catch about an hour plus of sleep before arriving at about 9.20 am in Solo, Indonesia.

It was a small airport. The arrival hall has only 2 lanes!!!; one for international passport holders and the other one is for local.
Taxis are readily available outside the airport. They all offer the same minimal price of 50,000 Rp to drive you down to the town. We took none of the taxis there as they were reluctant to reduce their fares. From our survey after asking a few locals in the aiport, we knew we could get to the town with a cheaper price. So, we walked out to search for other taxis. The search was pretty brief and we got Mr.Daniel to drive us down town at a fair price of 35,000 Rp.

Left to right, from the top:

1) One of the house with a gabenor like statue.

2) Solo city map at display in Adem Ayem Restaurant, where we had our lunch. [Rate: 1.5 stars; I ordered a bowl of Soto there. Although there were considerable amount of people queued up for take-aways, the food there is not really as nice as I expected.]

3) Slamet Riyadi Street; the busiest street in Solo ( if I'm not mistaken)

4) Our dinner at Malioboro Restaurant. We had:

  • fried chicken (ayam goreng)- crispily delicious.. one of Solo's nice food ;)
  • roasted chicken (ayam panggang) - finger lickin' good
  • sweet and sour vege (which they recommended) - horribly sweet

with rice. Overall, it was a satisfying meal. [Rate: 4 stars]

5) Petrol stalls.

6) Atria Cafe. It was indeed rather surprising to find this decent and quite well decorated cafe here. Nice and quiet ambience, perfect for a cup of tea after walking around whole day. [Rate: 4 stars]

7) The 'hotel' we stayed for that night. They said the room come with fan but to our surprise, it is only an exhaust fan!? %#$@!! The budget hotels near the railway station is generally in poor condition. However, we chosed to stay there because it is within our budget and the station is just a stone's throw away. [Rate: 1.5 stars]

Our next destination: Yogjakarta (by train).

Our 'old house'

by | | 0 comments
Whenever we celebrate our own new year, be it Hari Raya or Chinese New Year, we will all swarm back to our own hometown (if condition allows) during the festive season and everybody sings, "Balik Kampung! oh oh oh..balik kampung~..." Balik kampung to me means balik Taiping.

I used to go back Taiping, my father's hometown for Chinese New Year and Christmas every year. Then when the church's carolling switched from attending every open house to only one or two house in an area, we stoped going back during year end since there are no more christmas celebration in our 'old house'. As everybody grows, some of my cousins got married, and some migrated elsewhere, so there are lesser people attending reunion dinner every year. And then we stopped going back altogether two years ago.

And...now, our 'old house' has been sold as it is really 'old' and to maintain it would cost a big sum. It was only practical to sell the house. So, before they hand the key over to the lawyer next month, I took a trip back to have a last glance at our 'old house', which held over seventy years of Mdm.Say, Mdm. Chew and the five Lim brothers, at 175, Jalan Chung Thye Phin...

Expectations

by | | 0 comments
Expectations; we all have it. Right from the very moment we qualify as a life being, 'expectations' clinged on to us everywhere, tightly, till the day we depart.

As soon as being in the form of an embryo, we are expected to healthily develop and grow. Everyone, especially parents, is expecting us to arrive to the world safe and healthy. And of course, we grow up with our parents' expectations. When we enter the schools, the teachers have expectations on us too. Then when we finally graduated and work, we are then responsible for our boss' expectations. When married, our spouse and family expect something out of us as well. The list of great expectations goes on. Similarly, we have expectations on them too. Annoyingly, expectations never really leave us alone, do they?

In every relationship that bridges us together, expectations exist and it is hard to escape from one. Its existance signifies that it is only right to do according to and hence, that is what should be done. With so many expectations adhering to us, sometimes it is plain hard to juggle between meeting his' and her's. Also, not to forget, we too expect something out of ourselves. So, with his', her's and our own, it is no easy job to please everyone.

A lot of time we work, or maybe even struggle, towards meeting other's expectations on us to avoid upseting any of them. However, some expectations are just simply too hard to be met. Or in some cases, they may be expecting more and more out of us. So till the end of the day, the only product may only be exhaustation. And that, we have not included our own interest, our own dreams, our own plans, and our own destiny.

Heave it out, "Hey! What about me?!" Pause a while and ok...dead silence. When nobody seems to notice your existence or even cares about your interest, that makes your heart swells.

Perhaps at some point we just have to bear the pain of dissapointing some people in our life or the pain of letting go 'the hold'. No wonder people always say that it is impossible to please everybody in this world.

congrats!!!

CONGRATS!

Congrats to all! We have all made it through our pre clinical years. *whoopee*

Meet all of you in K.Terengganu, people :)

Just like what the external examiner drew on the board today,

the first point is when we first got into UCSI; the second is when we finished our Year 2 (pre clinical years) and the third point is when we graduate form medical school.

We have just completed our Year 2 and there is still a long way to go. This is just the beginning...

Beep! Beep! Time 2 make babies

Your phone yelled out the message ringtone, you reached out to pick it up. Some of us might be thinking who's the sender, etc. Especially if you are starting to wonder whether your phone is sick or dead since there hasn't been any incoming texts or calls, you will be skipping in joy to see who has finally decided to text you. And you open the inbox.

It is your telco service messages. -_-"

Or it is some texts from whatever clubs you joined promoting some events/ stuffs. -_-"

Or it is a text message from unknown origin congratulating you on your lucky jackpot win, bla bla.. -_-"'

Well, i don't know about you but as for me, whatever anticipation I may have before reading the text message will immediately snap off and my poor phone will be chucked to a corner out of my sight. Unless it is something relevantly interesting of course.

Then as the text message services become more and more commercialized high-tech, you can opt to receive text allerts on game scores, news, etc for the matter of being kiasu-to-know-it-first or just because you are plain lazy and of course ultimately it is for convenience.

In addition to that, you can also spend your money on receiving etceteras like daily horoscope, feng shui, and inspirational/motivational messages.

And now, "Beep! Beep!"

You open and read the message:

A man with brittle stem of hope,

haunted by the black shadows

that gambles off soil, light, water,

and the broken vase

A picture dear to the heart;

An image that saddens my soul

Thoughts raced over

murmuring knots thrown over

And I kneeled over

to speak to our Father

Father,

may your gracious providence

be shown to your dear child

may you open & show the way

when everything seems tightly shut

And today

I am truly happy

to see the gleam of hope

brightly shone once again

in the man I saw that day

Father

I know you are always here

with us

Thank you,

Thank you for answering my prayer

Thank you for your great mercy and blessings

Thank you

They said procrastination is an addiction. And well, I am very addicted to it. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I need to start

I need to focus

I need to concentrate

I need to start preparing

And I need to stop procrastinating

I am stuck

I need God

I need help

I am lost

I need guide

I am weak

I need strength

I need motivation

I need empathy

I need everything I need

to walk through

to pass my pre-clinical years

then my clinical years

and to become what God wants me to be

Am I worried?

I could not hide

What is there to do

Than to pray it through

As I grow

year by year

I gradually lost 'the touch'

Birthdays during childhood,

cakes and McD will do the trick;

Birthdays during teenage,

cakes and craziness makes the day

Cakes and candles

Gifts and presents

Is that what birthday is all about?

It is coming

But no tiny bits of crackles of anticipation

I could feel

I wish I could

It is coming

But yet no sprinkle of joy

I could feel

I wish I could

Whats worth celebrating?

I wish I know

If I could stop something

If I could stop something

I would not stop the time

I would say,

"Stop asking"

"Stop asking why did I lost much weight"

"Stop asking about her"

"Stop asking about him"

"Stop asking about me"

"Stop asking about this"

"Stop asking about that"

"Stop asking me questions"

"Stop asking altogether"

[p/s- note: Blog is one of my outlet, it can be like a diary. I just wish to write. If nothing is seen, the choice of read is yours. I would not be responsible for any depressing damage it may do.]

Reunion Dinner

Last Sunday, February the 11th, I had our reunion dinner with my extended family (all first, second, and third degree relatives) of paternal side. As usual our family dinner is held at the Damansara Palace Restaurant. Since my cousins have gradually expanded our Lim's family, some will 'sub' and have their own reunion dinner on CNY eve. So prior to CNY, there we are gathering and feasting together.

Took a few snapshots during the dinner:

my 'sort-of-nephews' (i think)

Actually, they are my grandfather's brother's wife's sister's grandchildren, so what do I call them? ...and yeah, the one in red is one of his twin brothers.

my mother and I

One of the twins took this picture for us, after me teaching them. Lovely isn't it :)

fried rice, the 2nd last dish (before dessert)

One of the twins, who sat beside me, forced me to take this picture. How? He kinda like threatened me and refused to eat unless I snap a picture of his bowl of fried rice and show it to him.

Didn't take much picture and that's about it, our 'dog/pig' year family reunion dinner.
